Rising Voices Roundup: Oct 15 – Oct 30

What we've been up to…

It's been a very busy two weeks at Rising Voices!

Thanks to BiblioWorks for the invitation to take part in a social media training with three community librarians in the department of Chuquisaca in Central Bolivia. The librarians from these rural communities are in good hands with the knowledgable and committed staff who were on hand during the day-long workshop to provide mentoring and support to the librarians who are just starting off in the world of citizen media.

We were also in London for the Mozilla Festival, a meeting place for hundreds of coders, teachers, hackers, and journalists, working to find new solutions for digital problems.  You can see the notes from one of our sessions about how groups working in the open space can collaborate more closely on the wikimedi blog: bit.ly/1adZzDD

We have also been collaborating with the team from Global Voices Aymarata to produce audio podcasts in the Aymara language. The content is comprised of summaries of the translations of Global Voices posts reformatted and packaged for a local audience in El Alto, Bolivia to be played over Aymara-language radio stations and distributed on CDs to rural communities. Here is a short video of the digital audio recording workshop held with GV Aymara Editor Victoria Tinta and radio journalist Norma Barrancos this past week.

From the blog:

Ecuador: Matavilela, a Literary Alternative to “Killing Time”- The digital literary magazine Matavilela specializes in essays, but also has a special interviews section called #MataPreguntas (KillerQuestions). Daniel Lucas, Matavilela's webmaster, participated in Conectándonos Ecuador.

Digital Revolution in Reverse: Syria’s Media Diversifies Offline -Though digital media was key in the uprisings of the Arab Spring, today, analog media has made a comeback. Under an Internet blackout, citizen media activists are working to spread information both abroad and inside the country, through a combination of digital and traditional methods.

Ecuador: Radialistas Launches Tutorials for Free Radio Software – Radialistas has recently launched a set of online tutorials about a variety of topics to help people use radio and open software to spread information about their communities. As part of our Conectándonos series, community manager Clara Robayo talks about the project.

Story-Making Machines: SoundCloud – Rising Voices republishes an interview conducted by Transom.org, who spoke with Evan Tenebaum, Soundcloud's audio content manager – a platform where you can freely share your sounds and listen to work made by a community of audio producers from around the world.

The VISPERA: Turning a Community of Artisans into Entrepreneurs- Highlighting artists and artisans in Paraguay, this online platform is raising awareness of this community, building a multidimensional network of craft makers, museums, cultural centers, and heritage sites.

Talking Dictionaries from Micronesia – In July 2013, the Living Tongues Institute organized another language revitalization workshop for endangered language activists from around Micronesia focusing on technology and the creation of “Talking Dictionaries” for each of the languages represented.

New Voices on Blog Action Day 2013 – Past and present Rising Voices grantee projects contributed to Blog Action Day, a global event where bloggers from around the world write about the same topic on October 16, 2013. These projects joined thousands of other bloggers to share their perspectives on the topic of Human Rights in Brazil, Niger, and Colombia.

An Unashamed Inuk, Rising Indigenous Pop Star – Inuktitut singer Kelly Fraser says, “It’s hard to explain that I’m working to save the Inuit language… No matter what people say, no matter what we’re doing, a lot of our traditional culture goes away the more we learn about the other world… I want to help and make our language stronger so we can identify ourselves.”

Are You Reporting on Public Services? Here's How You Might…- How can small-scale advocacy groups make the best use of the Internet? A recent skill share at the engine room discussed a diversity of methods for citizen reporting on public services around the world.
