Get Online Week 2013: Europe's Digital Empowerment Campaign

This week is “Get Online Week”, a “digital empowerment campaign” across Europe, teaching new skills to those with limited exposure to the Internet. The trainings sessions and other events will take place at ICT learning centers (“telecenters”), public libraries, NGOs, and other educational venues, all organized by Telecenter Europe.

The program this year tries to address Europe's rising unemployment, and especially focusing on young people, teaching and training them in new skills.

Some of the programs launched this week include:

- Diaspora MD, an Ushaidi-based map targeted at Moldovan migrants, showing data and locations of embassies consulates, disapora organizations, and other helpful gropus and offices across Europe that can give aid to migrants (more information is available on the Telecenter Europe blog).

- a partnership with the Macedonian organization Open the Windows, will involve 40 ICT learning centers around the country

- in Latvia, the “get online” trainings used the Employment Toolkit to help people increase their job-hunting skills online.

- The website IT4Youth has made available online a toolkit translated into Russian including short videos on beginner programming for children and information about ICT skills needed for employment, as well as two student-oriented contests.
