Januária: Extra, Extra, Read All About It!

As the culmination of a seven-week program where young residents of the town of Januária, Brazil learned how to ask questions about how their local government operates and to turn those questions into blog posts, the citizen journalists from the Rising Voices grantee project Friends of Januária recently published a special-edition newspaper called the “Folha do Norte” (Northern Page) [pt]. The newspaper complements the ongoing work of the citizen journalists, who have been posting investigative reports about local issues that affect all residents.

In addition to publishing their articles online, the electronic and printed newspaper provides the opportunity to reach local residents that may not be connected to the internet. Available at various locations across Januária, the free newspaper provides informational articles about local issues ranging from health care to infrastructure projects to education, as well as the role of culture in the town.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be translating excerpts from some of the articles from the “Folha do Norte” into English.
