Training in Serbian Web Journalism School supported by Rising Voices helped most of its students to change their career paths. Here is what some of them did after the training.

Just after obtaining his Web Journalist Certificate Goran Necin made his own news web site. He gathered team of web journalists to make an alternative source of information to mainstream media. He covers travel, education, lifestyle and politics. Necin recently wrote a blog post arguing that hooligans would destroy soccer clubs in Serbia. As a furious antinazi activist, Necin posts about neonazi symbolism. Necin writes about various Belgrade events. He recently covered Street of Open Hearth, an event featuring Belgrade actors raising money for local children hospital.

Following completion of web journalism training Zikica Zivkovic started working for National Television web portal. Zivkovic claims that Serbian Web Journalism school was a golden key to his career. After few months of work Zivkovic was promoted to web editor in charge of web portal’s news section.

Similarly, student at Faculty for Culture and Media, Katarina Jovanovic started her career working for National Television web portal. She is in charge of its digital media section.

The oldest Serbian web journalist, Milica Stojkovic makes videos of cultural events in Belgrade. She has a popular YouTube channel with one video having more than 8000 views. She recently published music video Gypsies Fly to Sky performed by prominent actor Ivan Bosiljcic. Voice of America made a feature report about Stojkovic.

Except applying her new skills as an editor at National Radio Service web site Gordana Eric continues to write her blog. She comments culture, poetry, film and new technologies. In her inspired blog post, Eric wrote about computer literacy as a major problem of 21st century Europe. She wrote about how important it is to know standards of web communication. Web journalism is quite different from TV, print or radio claims Eric who proposed additions for journalist code of ethic relating to new media.

Tijana Vlahovic who worked as an editor of prominent Serbian daily newspapers Glas Javnosti web site found new employment. She works for Serbian Public Library. Her job is closely related to new technologies while she shapes up her PhD thesis from biology.

Dragan Milosevic used skills acquired in Web Journalism School to integrate pictures and videos in Google maps. He uses Google maps to help tourists find their way in big European cities. Milosevic works for Kon Tiki travel agency.

Dragana Bjelica is still working for Journalist Association of Serbia. She was promoted to editor of its web site. She applied new knowledge in writing and structuring web stories. This is beneficiary to numerous journalists who receive timely and sharply written information from Dragana Bjelica.

Because of disagreement with Journalist Association this project was discontinued but extension is expected in 2010 in cooperation with Center for Digital Media. The Center would spread digital literacy on behalf of Rising Voices and educate web journalists.

The students had a task to create an editorial office. The editor had to be in the office and journalists had their duties: to choose one film to watch on FEST, to attend press conference etc. Later they had to write about film and to attend press conference of the film “Here and there”, where they’ve made audio and video recordings.

In her work, Katarina Jovanović described the premiere of the film “Here and there”.
“Main actor David Thornton, who played ruined musician travelling between New York and Belgrade, held a final speech. For this script, director Darko Lungulov won “Balkan fond” prize in Thessalonica. He said that he was glad to see his first big film on FEST. Film “Here and there” will be in theaters during next fall”.

Žikica Živković wrote that more than 100.000 tickets were sold after ten festival days and more than 70 premieres of films in six categories.
“This thirty seventh festival edition is from this year one of the top three most visited festivals in FEST history. After our meeting in front of main entrance in “Sava centar”, by passing through shrilling scanner we have realized that we could make one mistake. We could attend convention of one of leading parties in the country which was held next to the theater press room. According to the number of visitors of our special broadcast site and our accounts on Twitter, “web-journalists of UNS” happily went home to their families, after very hard and challenging day.

In his work Darko Nikolić wrote that last day of FEST begun pretty quietly and that everything looked like one extremely regular, non working day in Serbia.
“In the beginning of the day, big building on New Belgrade looked more like closed museum, than something that could announce upcoming ceremony. Barely 30 journalists attended last press conference. Preoccupied with presence of few well known film workers, many of journalists “went crazy” reporting from one, so usual end of one, so big event.

Gordana Erić wrote about rewarded participants of FEST.
In category “Europe out of Europe” – Georgian film “The other bank”
“FIPRESCI” reward – Italian films “Gomorra” and “Il divo”.
“Nebojša Đukelić” reward – Serbian film “The life and death of porn gang”
Reward “Eritrocit” of daily newspaper “Politika” – Kazakhstan film “The gift to Stalin”

With title “Small but well chosen company” Dragan Milošević wrote about students who spend their test day on FEST.

Goran Necin wrote that four films were in final competition for the winner of “Europe out of Europe” category – “Shultes” (Russia), “No one’s son” (Croatia), “The other bank” (Georgia) and “The gift to Stalin” (Kazakhstan).

“By unanimously decision, “The gift to Stalin” is declared to be the best film in this category. Director of film Rustem Abdrasev got “Eritrocit” reward from daily newspaper “Politika”. Georgian film “The other bank” got “Special mention” reward.”

Under journalists premise „Kick reader in the head with – title” Lidija explained that substance of teaser is in only one, first sentence. Students were informed how to „hook” readers with a lot of title examples. After that, they begin to practice.

Writing about “Beovoz”(the name of train system in Belgrade) Marina Obizajeva gave an example of cliffhanger teaser.

“Beovoz” is the alternative or only help for GSP (City traffic firm)?
Is it possible to fulfill pre-election promises in the time of world crisis?
“I see a solution”, says Željko Đukanović, manager of Direction for public transportation in Belgrade railway. Whether some station of public transportation is close to streak or not, that’s not a problem. If it’s necessary, we’ll move them closer to “Beovoz” stations. What’s the problem then? “The problem is safety and the fact that trains don’t circulate often. Besides that, on some sections, streaks are problematical so the trains are slow”, Đukanović said.

Dragana Bjelica wrote text using question teaser.

“Živko against Živka”
Are the organizers of “Universiade 2009″ misogynists or Živka is just unattractive for sportsmen? Although three years ago it was well known that Universiade will be in 2009 in Belgrade, if we promoted Živko then, instead of incapable mascot Živka, this wouldn’t be important now. His career is also finished today.

Goran Necin gave the examples of headline teasers.
“Mascot “Živko” make his maker nervous; FEST is driving his thirty seventh circle; Mass rallies of supports for terrorist organization Hamas in Gaza; Zimbabwe: Mugabe split government with opposition; “Raiffeisen” in the group of “high risk” banks.

Tijana Vlahović wrote text using summary teaser.

“Even after Tito – Chavez”
On referendum Hugo Chavez got the possibility of unlimited number of candidatures for president of Venezuela with 54 percent of citizen votes.

Katarina Jovanović wrote text also using summary teaser.

“Fest 09: Register”
“Actor Ralph Fiennes opened on February 20th 37. FEST in Belgrade under premise “Register”. Those who are interested for this film festival would have an opportunity to see about 80 movies in hall “Sava centar”, “Balkan” cinema, Museum “Kinoteka” and Cultural Center of Belgrade.
They had to write their own news on the basis of CNN news about recent plane crash which took place in Buffalo, New York.

Žikica Živković wrote that strong plane crash of Colgan Air company, on the Continental Airlines flight disturbed peaceful night in the nearby of Buffalo.
“In the moment of impact, all 49 aboard the plane died, along with one person on the ground. Marvin Renslow did not come to family lunch this weekend and Beverly Eckert shared the same destiny which killed her lost husband on September 11th 2001 during the attack on World trade center”.

Gordana Erić wrote that airplane was en route from Newark, New Jersey crashing down eight kilometers from airport.
“TV showed the pieces of airplane in populous quart. Two persons were transmitted in hospital, but died shortly after that. The cause of plane crash is still unknown. In the moment of tragedy, there was hard rain in Buffalo”.

Dragan Milošević thinks that this is perhaps another moment that could start discussion about safety.
“The fact is that, until plane crash, crew did not have any problems with plane, at least not until last contact with flight controller. If Internet as media can show feelings then you could read thinking and statements of those that lost their relatives.”

Darko Nikolić believes that there is something strange in human consciousness when we hear that someone is no longer among the living.
Well known phrase “All the best about late one” then come in center of attention, without any special excuse. Unfortunately, sometimes without good reason too. CNN report about recent plane crash that happened near Buffalo speaks exactly about that, because the stories about victims are presented under curtain of slight intemperately “faultlessness”?

In his news, Bojan Veličković wrote about individual tragedy.
“Among victims was young student, Madeline Loftus. Maddie, born in New Jersey, prepared herself to play in the game for her ex hockey team on Saturday.
“We are all deeply shocked with this tragedy”, said Jerry Boyes, chairman of the club.

Dragana Bjelica noticed that death of 50 people in plane crash near Buffalo and their biographies on CNN internet site, is not the most read story today.
“Four persons killed in shooting” is headline number one on the list. Ex worker in one New York hospital killed yesterday four persons that he knew well. “Thirteen years old British boy became father” is second most read story today. Portraits of the victims of plane crash are on fourth place on the list.

Now I have even more friends on this Internet page, and possibilities are getting bigger every day. „Journalists in the network” are enthusiasts, speculators and maybe even promoters of new ideas. They don’t ask too much, and they are ready to give a lot. Positive thoughts and tolerance are the basics for good start in the days to come. Mission of this group are tolerance, connecting, socialising and new ideas”, wrote Dragan Milošević and Goran Necin.

On second day of the weekend students attended confession of one woman named Jelena, who’s ex husband was drug addict. Because of his drug addiction he still has problems and he is prosecuting her and their child. With help of Danica Radovanovic, students learned how to fight for this woman’s rights on Facebook, as well as to fight for rights of every person in danger in Serbia.

„Drug addict in Serbia can threaten his child life even when he has temporary precaution delivered juridically. Some other future story will narrate about improvement of legal act. This story is for those who are worrying about established laws. Or for those who should be worrying. This is the story about court of law and police in Sopot, who don’t do much to protect mother and her child from drug addicted father.

Jelena is a mother of a four years old child. After three years of conjoined life, she divorced from husband-drug addict because of his addiction. After that, she moved far away from birthplace, in order to start new life, with a new man. Thereupon the problems started. Ex husband don’t intend to resigne with the fact that he can see child only once in two weeks during the weekend. He comes under drug influence with threats, and all that Jelena and her child can hear from official departments is not promising for their peaceful sleep. This family found asylum in one of marginal municipalities in Belgrade. In one relatively small ambience, they can’t find understanding of other people, nor any other possible protection.

How can we help? Link from the heart to this action for big necessity for mother and her four years old son. If you do it, then do it for real. If we want to help, the idea have to be materialized: mother and her child must have adequate help. In this case that means protection. When? The best help is when it is on time and totally. Answer to the question „When” is the same for you and court of law and police and welfare work institutions. The answer is NOW”, wrote students on this page.

Besides that, they have learned the skills of using and verification of online sources in making web-story. Considering that fact, “PBWiki” was presented as a concept for cooperation and team work. During the classes, the students wrote texts together by correspondence over “PBWiki”.

The first group of students was under the impression of the inauguration of new president of United States of America, Barack Obama. They wrote that on January 20th new hi-tech president of USA swore in front of the bible, walking after that into his office. Christopher Hass, official blogger of the president transmitted all the key moments in last three weeks. Conclusion – America is finally smiling. She is smiling with a lot of pain in legs because of the long walking on Inauguration day.

Is Barack Obama the Messiah is the actual question: “… a light will shine through that window, a beam of light will come down upon you, you will experience an epiphany … and you will suddenly realize that you must go to the polls and vote for Obama” – Barack Obama Lebanon, New Hampshire”.

The second group of students looked back on other bloggers writing in text with title “Big brother’s eagle eye”.
„In many countries, governments have blessed unfounded arrests, long lock ups, even tornments without proceedings. Publicity about general protection and trust in “Big brother” has increased. Video-surveilances are sprouting, documents with biometric data are establishing and large crowd are spending days in front of modern fireplace – TV. The subject of this week research in the School of Web-journalism was the analysis of atmosphere considering this topics in Serbian blogosphere.

Blogger Marko said: “Reputedly, biometric passports are condition for non-visa regime for Serbian citizens. German government has resigned under pressure of publicity from taking biometric data of citizens for new ID. So, what we are going to do now? Now it is Germans that are crazy, right? Of course not, they can do it, whatever they are doing, they are good in it. But when they don’t want new ID’s with cheep, crazy Serbs are late in development, stupid nationalists, the enemies of progress”.

The third group of students was interested to find out what does Serbian blogosphere look like. Judging by aggregate of Serbian blogs – SerbianBloggers.info, our blogosphere is not to big. The authors still have “confused thoughts” because they are curious for various themes researching.
Serbian blogosphere is one pretty livelily and interesting place. Anyone can find something there. Like old culinary receipts that has been truly treasury of (not only culinary) knowledge.

In expectation of receipts, travelers of Serbian blog-wideness, who have or don’t have new passport, could run into a Vrtarić-My blog. It is a presentation of Miroslav Vrtarić from Čukarica. He is economist by profession, and fan of guitar, writing and socialising. With his identified blog Miroslav takes part in Serbian blogging community very successfully.

This week, students of the School of Web-Journalism learned how to draw up their maps in order to illustrate web-story.

Using the graph as an illustration, Tijana Vlahović has written about Serbian response to gas crisis.

„Considering the fact that the use of unrestored sources of energy is limited, there will be changes in using natural planets sources. Because of good strategic position of our country, the plan for Southern cours is to go through Serbia. This can be seen by looking to key points of gas pipeline (map 1). By counting on using Serbian natural capacities of energy sources, with wise and ecological combining, the production and energy spending could be optimized. After that, we could lean on domestic sources.

Using the graph as an illustration Bojan Cvetković wrote that, according to NIS Petrol, rock-oil proccesing in early days has followed stable growing curve.

„Humans need energy everyday so it represents a growing price on a political table, inasmuch as in „measuring” in region as well as in a „poker” that big countries play with it. Real question is how it would be possible to achieve correct prognosis of domestic rock-oil consumption and rock-oil derivatives, in the conditions of using gas as an instrument of politic”.

Using the graph and map as an illustration Žikica Živković wrote that in expectation of economic crisis, Serbs use more and more their own cars.

„While women worry about leaving food for winter parallel with cleaning houses after New Year celebration distinguished with drink and lots of food, their husbands joyfuly drive to the gas stations. Considering the fact that fuel in Serbia has reached value of catastrophical 120 dinars, after what it rapidly went down to 70, many Serbians started to think about buying motor vehicles”.

Using the graph and map as an illustration Gordana Erić wrote that Ukranian-Russian gas crisis, which is happening on every winter, this year is really serious.
„The President of European Commision Jose Manuel Baroso stated that he will suggest to European energy companies to prove legal action against Russian „Gasprom” and Ukranian „Naftogas”, unless they find the way to end crisis letting the gas to sprout to European customers. Serbia reproduces only eight per cent self-absorption of needs for gas. Therefore, our country must have in future the best relationship with Russia, the state with the biggest reserves of gas in the world.

Using the graph as an illustration Dragan Milošević looked back on a Facebook phenomenon.

„I thought it was a joke. Facebook is perhaps the most popular on global network. Many young people, from eight to eighteen years intensively use Facebook. For a long time, I was not devotee of all that but…the number of those people that joined me from the moment when I „OPENED MY ACCOUNT” started to grow rapidly.

The students interpreted on their own ways invite to philosophic debate about “Dicks intellectualism and toothless authorities” of Absolute Genius.

Dragan Milošević wrote that Absolute Genius has provoked attendance starting up the discussion on topic “changing of society and acting in society in which we are living”. Provoke has followed from the very beginning, from the title. He brought out his opinion that education system in Serbia repose on the obsolete method and inviolable of the authority, which is, as he thinks, the part of residuals, probably paradigms in old “Russian” method of operation.
Goran Necin conceived that the lesson was interspersed with high intensity xenophobia, in some parts even comical.

Gordana Erić believes that the main points of the lesson are the facts that society got into crisis primarily because of the bad educational system, unbalanced society qualities, and certain character lineaments of our people, among the rest the one which for all mismatches blame everyone else.
“In this moment, quasi-intellectualism, the fear of false authorities but not a free will, are ruling our society. We live in virtual world, as a society we are on the bottom”, enclose the lesson Absolute Genius discomfiting roughly discussion.
However, the philosophic debate was finished in peaceful tone, with the conclusion that it is not that pesimistic and that the exit do exist.

Darko Nikolić point out that Absolute Genius has an interesting opinion about plague that pervade all pores of the society.
„As a community, we have let that in all things fall and touch the bottom. Now we are whistling at the bottom. Let us make it for once to indeed we all be all right, to cure this cancer which is hacking us now”, said Genius.
Katarina Jovanović said that Absolute Genius tried to explain with „selected” words that they should not only „stink and wait” anymore, but under lot URGENT to do something when it comes to their lives and surround.

Using that way, Dragan Milosevic made graphic novel with actual subject – Everybody wants the same thing – Happy New Year. “New year holidays and Santa Claus are the wishes of many people on this world. Let us be together the part of one world and many wishes. In hope that 2009. will bring beautiful days, hush dream and lots of joy to all children on the world, this slideshow will be in support of that. On the next day, Ljubisa Bojic held the class about sociology and web media. Students learned from him that conversation is basic life philosophy of a successful web journalist. “Support information flow by responding to every message. Energy must find its way in and out. Do not be afraid to say no. Publish everything online so other people can use it. Try to help everyone. You cannot expect achieving your goals without team spirit and mutual assistance. Web journalists are obliged to care about the truth. They need to show multiple perspectives arguing on the important issues for the society. Nothing comes easy. It would be boring that way. Handle your hard times well”, said Mr. Bojic. After this class, students of the school started organizing the front page of their sites using netvibes entablature. Here is the link to site of Zikica Zivkovic: http://www.netvibes.com/zikicazivkovic Report made by Dragana Bankovic

Mr. Gordon lecture the class on the subject “„Photojournalism – Crash Course”.

Some students wrote on their own blog pages their impressions about this photojournalism course.

Darko Nikolić wrote that if we want to sustain purpose topic with visually impressive details in web-journalism, it is necessarily that the internet inscriptions of an author are improved by good photographs.

“The story about photographs that “worth more than thousand words” begins with psychical and technical preparation. Only with necessary segments such as opportuneness, feeling for brightness and persistency, photograph can sublimate creation of web-journalist making his work more special, and considerable. The strength of good photography in journalism can be seen, if I manage to do that with my own quality, because it can really often replace thousands of words”.

Besides talking with Mr. Russell Gordon, students had a lesson to analyze economic situation of Serbia in relation to the countries in region. Gordana Erić observed that Serbia is most expensive of all countries created on the region of ex-SFRJ. The prices of basic life comestibles are among the highest in the region.

“The stand that Serbia is “wonderland”, come out with one more example. With fall of dinar currency, prices of home-made products have enlarged, which is normal thing. But, by periodical enlarge of dinar currency, which is the result of intervention of National bank of Serbia on interbank custom market, as well as by downfall of rock oil prices on world market, the prices in no case can “simmer down”.

The wave of new prices for basic needs in Serbia, Bojan Veličković called “tsunami”.
“The prices in Serbia are totally illogical. On one side, you have cheap market-place and Chinese wares for which you don`t have to pay taxes. On the other side, there are monopolists who represent different brands and collect impudently high taxes. Although our country is not far away from West speaking of shops with popular wares, they are selling it for unthinkable high prices which make us one of the most expensive countries in Europe”.

Žikica Živković realized that the period of transition changed customer’s consciousness.
“From one age of general poorness, we walked into the period with wealthy credit offer and improvement of personal standard. It started with purchasing household machines and cars. The psychology of spending money has transfused to rural region. Therefore, living in the cities is poorest in contrast to villages where there is no need for luxury and European way of handling money.

Report made by Dragana Banković

Darko Nikolić choosed the first photography

Goran Necin took the second photography
