Nari Jibon established and has been maintaining two blogs ( English and Bengali) since 2007 in order to increase creativity and the writing skills of the staff and students. After a few months of having started our blogging activities, we got a Rising Voices mini-grant that has been helping a lot to improve its activities. We could let the community people know through our students and their guardians about the importance of blogging. Since we started our blogging activities more than three hundred students/guardians got to know about blogging though they all did not do blogging actively but we got some of them who blogged and as yet blogging. Our trainer Taslima Akter invited to attend a blogging workshop arranged by Relief International Bangladesh as a blog trainer. She trained more than 25 people on blogging following Citizen Media guide.

We arranged several blogging workshops for the staff and students. We also have been maintaining a weekly training program on photo/video blogging etc. In our workshop we got Mr. Razib Ahmed a renowned professional blogger, Mr. Shawn Ahmed from Uncultured project, Ms. Kira Kariakar a Venezuelan photo blogger and journalist. We learned many things from them about blogging, photo, video blogging, and about Flickr etc. We also got Citizen Media guide from rising voices that helped us a lot to improve our blogging activities. We are following Citizen Media guide. Our trainer is following the guide to train up our students/bloggers regularly. In these ways our current students are learning about blogging, increasing their creativity and writing skills And also our upcoming students will be learning about blogging as blogging is integrated to the entire course curriculum. Now six of our staffs and 12 students have separate blogs.

We also are planning to visit some NGOs to tell their staff about the importance of blogging. We will encourage them to do blog . We also will invite them to come to Nari Jibon to learn more about blogging and if they want we will arrange a special training program for them.

We can not say that we have succeeded but we must say that we are on the right track and in future we will reach to our goals.

Nari jibon blogdol arranged blog workshop on Friday (20.06.08). Venezuelan journalish and photo blogger Ms. Kira Kariakar, Mr. Shawn ahmed of Uncultured project, Prof. Dr. Kathryn B. Ward (Executive Director nari jibon project), Ms. Shaina Haider (Visiting English teacher/researcher (Nari Jibon) and under graduate student Florida University USA) were present in the meeting. 40 students and 13 staff attended the workshop. In the workshop Ms Kira told the staff/students/bloggers about the importance of photo blogging, flickr account etc.

In discussion on Flickr she told us that Flickr is a photo management and sharing application. We can use flickr to store pictures for our personal private use, to share them with our friends/family, to aid us blogging, to establish communities with friends and family and to pursue an interest through communities. She informed that in order to join flickr we need a yahoo account and no other email account can be used.

She told that image is worth a thousand words. Sometimes a unique image can express what we want to say. Other time an image can bring strength, emphasis to what we want to say. She also told that blogs that have posts with pictures often get more visitors than post without. Readers get interested on the pictures of the bloggers and his/her “eye of world” so they’ll mean likely come back. She told pictures get listed in search engine like google and they attract visits referred by the search. And photo blog use pictures as their mean of expression instead of writing.

Ms. Kira told us the way of uploading pictures. She told in this respect that there are many ways to upload pictures and videos to flickr. We can do it through the website with third part application and plug-ins by email and with our mobiles. On the website we click on the link to upload pictures on the welcome page. We can use the basic upload photos and videos page. Ms Kira told us that we can send also pictures by email with an email address given to us for that purpose by flickr.

Ms Kira told us that we can organize our picture by set and collection (only for paid account). For free accounts there is another way to organize the pictures is by tagging. She also informed us how we can post a picture in our blogs from a flickr. In this respect she told that we can integrate our account with blogger. We can choose the pictures we want to blog even if it is not ours. And flickr account copyright permits. We select the size we need for our blog and insert the code of the image in our post. The email will be retrieved and displayed in our blog. Ms Kira also told about safety and copyright. She told that in general we can set our levels of safety for searching and for what kind of content we have. We have to establish in our setting if our content is searchable and if it’s safe.

We can keep all our rights of authorship or select any of the licenses of creative commons. At the end of her speeches she told that she needs a small group of students/bloggers so that she can teach them clearly and easily about flickr accounts etc.

On next Fridays (27.06.08, 04.07.08 and 11.07.08) she came to Nari Jibon and trained the students how to open flickr account and, how people can keep photos most organized way. She also helped to open separate blog for students and also opened flickr accounts for some students.

Nari Jibon blog meeting/workshop with Ms. Kira went well. Ms. Kira came at 11:40 and stayed at Nari Jibon till 1:30pm.38 students and 13 staff attended the meeting. She wanted to know about us, about Nari Jibon activities, about our blog. What we are doing? Why we are doing blog. She also wanted to know whether bloggers have separate blogs etc. I gave her the answers of her queries (I told her about Nari Jibon activities, students/staffs are doing blog to share their thoughts, experience to the people of home and abroad and increase their writing skills. They are writing about current events, nature, domestic violence, women rights etc in Bangla and English. I told her that blogging is also the part of our course curriculum. I also informed her that we would like to open separate blog for our best bloggers first and then for others but we could not do it due to slow internet. We will do it when things will be ok.
She told us about her country (location), food, dress, politics, about her blog (She informed that she writes in her blog in Spanish language about politics, her experience, thoughts, traveling etc), job etc (We also wanted to know some of those). She told how people can be benefited by blogging. She told that through blogging people can broaden their thoughts, creativity. In this respect she also told about her friends who become a celebrity by professional blogging. She told us about opening Google ad sense (through it bloggers can earn money).
She explained how the people/community/country can be benefited by blogging. She also told us the advantage of using flickr. She asked us to use flickr that can develop our photo blogging. In this respect Ms. Kira told us that she will be out of Dhaka for the next five weeks. She will come again (probably in the first week of April)) at Nari Jibon and tell us detail about flickr. She will open Nari Jibon flickr account and trained us on it and in this respect she informed that she does not know much about Video blogging.
Ms. Kira also wanted to know whether we know about face book ( Taslima informed her that she and some other bloggers know about face book. Then she told about the face book and its advantage and how their country benefited by the face book.
Ms. Kira also asked us to contact with Bangladeshi bloggers (She told about Shahidul). In this respect we informed her that we are keeping contact with Mehdi Hassan, Biplob Kumar dey and Shamiha Esha. We also told her that we are keeping contacts with Rajib Ahmed (Professtional blogger) and Shawn of Uncultured project.
Actually Ms. Kira told me before coming to Nari Jibon that she would like to know first about Nari Jibon, about Nari Jibon blogging activities and then she will plan how she can help us to develop our blogging.
In her speech she thanked some of our bloggers for their good post like; Street beggar, Dowry system of Bangladesh etc. She told all the bloggers to keep up their good works. She told them to write more on Bangladeshi women, women rights etc.

She also told that she was very much pleased to come to Nari Jibon, talking with the bloggers. She would come here again and again whenever she gets time (She informed that she has plenty of times). Our students/staff/bloggers also were very happy to have her in Nari Jibon and her visit will encourage them to develop their blogging activities, write/think more and make them more skilled and increase their creativity.
We also thanked Ms. Kira for coming to Nari Jibon and for giving her valuable time to develop our blogging activities.
