This week we have the pleasure to introduce to you the fifth of the first round grantees of the Rising Voices. ‘Neigbourhood Diaries’ is a citizen writing program moblising young people living in ’slums’ as citizen journalists to research, write and disseminate unrecognized and authentic community narratives in local and global media.

We are thrilled to announce the first five citizen media outreach projects to receive Rising Voices microgrants. In total we received 142 project proposals from over 40 different countries. What all of the project proposals have in common is a desire to enable their communities to tell their own stories, to write their own first draft of history, to document their traditions and culture before they are washed away by the tides of globalization.

Neighbourhood Diaries
Neighbourhood Diaries is a pilot project which trains children of Kolkata's red light slums how to use creative writing and online media to create and disseminate unrecognized and authentic community narratives in local and global media.

Pavel Kutsev of the Drop-in Center uses blog posts, photos, podcasts, and online video to share his experiences working at a harm reduction facility based in Kyiv, Ukraine. 
Iran Inside Out
Veteran Iranian videobloggers have partnered with the local film clubs in Iran to identify aspiring young filmmakers and teach them how to distribute their works online. 
FrontAIDS
The FrontAIDS project based in St. Petersburg, Russia uses citizen media to monitor accessibility to treatment for people living with HIV, AIDS, hepatitis, and TB in 20 regions around Russia. Rising Voices is a Global Voices project supported by the Knight Foundation and OSI.
