To kick off the second day of Conectándonos Ecuador, (read about the first day here) Juan Espinoza from Hivos presented the working groups that were created based on the participants’ interests.

The groups were defined as follows:

  • Indigenous Peoples
  • Gender
  • Art and Culture
  • Environment
  • Digital Inclusion (2)

Starting on Friday night, May 25, and during a few hours on Saturday, participants were to apply what they had learned in various workshops and create an online project.

Workshops were administered in 4 sessions of 3 workshops per session. Participants choose which workshops to attend in order to strengthen their skills in the following subjects:

  • Creating an audio podcast (Georgia Popplewell)
  • Digital strategy for campaigns and community management (Christian Esiponosa)- See a summary [es] by participant Carla Rby in her blog Periodismo Digital y Redes
  • Blog creation and optimization (Carlos Correa)
  • Collaborative projects in the Social Web (María Cristina Martínez)- She Biblioteca 2.0 [es], a compilation of digital books, documents, and more, that can be downloaded for free
  • Open Software (Carlos Correa)- See a summary [es] by Carla Rby in her blog Periodismo Digital y Redes
  • Citizen Journalism and Cyberactivism (Silvia Viñas)- See presentation [es] on SlideShare.
  • Mobile coverage (twitcasting, mobypicture, bambuser, qik, layar, nearby) (Christian Esiponosa)
  • Covering events in real time (María Cristina Martínez)
  • Qualities of an entrepreneur (Álvaro Castillo)

  • Using native languages ​​on the web (Eduardo Ávila)

Before dinner, Espinoza announced that each group would present their project with the other participants choosing which projects would be most feasible with the most impact. During and after dinner the groups met again to continue working on their project.

Thirty-four participants representing a variety of Ecuadorian provinces arrived in Loja on May 24. Although they had different interests, participants arrived ready to learn and to connect with others who are using citizen media for social change in their local communities.

Georgia Popplewell (Global Voices Managing Director), Eddie Ávila (Rising Voices Director), Silvia Viñas (Global Voices Latin America Editor), Christian Espinosa (creator of Cobertura Digital), Juan Espinoza (Hivos), Carlos Correa (UTPL) and Maria Cristina Martínez (creator of Día del Blog, “blog day”) mentored the participants throughout the event.

On the first day, after a brief introduction of each participant and their projects, the group attended a roundtable titled “New voices in digital communication.” The session, organized by the Communications department at UTPL, was open to the public and live-streamed through the Conectándonos blog [es]. Carlos Correa from UTPL moderated the session where Espinosa, Viñas, and Martínez discussed how new voices are using citizen media. UTPL uploaded a video of the roundtable:

During the roundtable, participants in the auditorium and those who listened online asked questions and shared reactions using the hashtag #ConECU on Twitter. The hashtag became a ‘Trending Topic’ [es] in Ecuador thanks to the audience's participation.

Martínez later opened a series of presentations by addressing the state of the Internet in Ecuador [es]. This was an opportunity for participants to talk about their projects in more detail.

Ávila then introduced Rising Voices, sharing some examples of how people from underrepresented groups are using citizen media in different parts of the world. Later, Correa presented several Ecuadorian online communities [es] and invited participants to take advantage of these groups to grow their network.

Espinoza concluded this round of presentations with a video about Hivos, the organization that helped finance this event.

Participants also took part in an activity where they were asked whether they agreed with basic concepts related to the Internet. Each walked to a part of the room representing their position on these basic concepts.

To finish off the first day, participants wrote down ideas for potential working groups. In the coming days these groups would have the opportunity to create an online project that uses citizen media. On Saturday, May 26, each group would present their project in front of their peers and mentors.
