Ukraine: Blogging about Dreams

Activists from the Association of Substitution Treatment Advocates of Ukraine [ru]aimed at uniting patients of the harm reduction programs believe that blogging can be an important tool in promoting the substitution therapy and advocating the rights of the patients. Recently the website of the Association opened a new section which contains the blogs of the activists of the Association from the various regions of Ukraine.  Currently the section has 9 blogs where people living with drug addiction, medical personnel, and social workers share their personal stories, reports, and news from the implementation of the substitution therapy programs in their cities and post their thoughts, ideas, and dreams.

Blogger Yura shares a story of a community day event where the patients and the medical personnel of the Zhytomyr substitution therapy site cleaned the area around the clinic. He wrote:

Spring!

Every human soul is happy when Spring is coming…

The sun is shining brightly, the first leaves appear, sparrows sing optimistically, and the first gentle green grass is growing. In such days, I wish everything was fine, people were smiling and happy. But how can you really be happy if you see trash appearing out of melting snow? That is why the patients of the site decided to clean the area around the substitution therapy office.

People brought with them the tools like shovels, rakes, and brooms. Guys who had a car brought a small cart to take the garbage away. We also took away a few bricks for from old brick wall and built a flowerbed next to the site. The medical personnel and the girls from the program brought some flowers to plant in the flowerbed.[…]

…these flowers will please our eyes until the late Fall. Our next plans are to build a bench next to our site for outdoor resting. But this is an issue of time.

In general, what makes me happy is the attitude of the guys towards the environment; I can see their desire to make the world around them better. We all change for better. We became a real people, good people!

The bloggers of Association website not only report their successes but write about the challenges they face. Blogger Aleksandr Voronov from Chernihiv raises a problem of combining the substitution treatment with having a regular job. It appears to be not so easy as the patients have to spend a few hours a day personally coming to the site to receive medications. Aleksandr urged his counterparts to unite and change this situation. He posted [ru]:

…for any human being to live a normal life, to establish or to come back to the family, to give birth and raise children and to reintegrate into the society in general is not enough just to receive a medication. You need to think about your daily bread as well! But how can you find a job if the only time the site is open is from 12 to 2 pm? Even a few months ago, if you have a certificate from an employer  you could have come at 8 to 9 in the morning or late in the evening, but now our Chief Doctor does not want even hear about this. … Friends! We need to do something about this. At the end, the success of the substitution treatment program directly depends on the personal successes of each of us.

Bloggers Viktoria from Kirovohrad shared a story of establishing of a support group for the patients of the substitution treatment she has been dreaming about for a long time.  Here is what she wrote about the first meeting of the group:

Everything starts with the dream, and this topic we discussed during our first meeting. When we were children, we could dream and this meant we were free. […] It was my old dream to start the support group for Kirovohrad substitution therapy patients. […]. Our group is young but already independent. Four people come to our first meeting, but all of them were there with children.  That is why three people participated in the meeting and the fourth guy, Sasha, who has a unique experience of ‘sober’ life and who ‘graduated’ from the substitution therapy took care of the children. The kids, in fact, had their own group, their own ‘equal-to-equal’ program… We also will grow, together with the children… I do not know yet how the guys will call our group – I let them to decide on the name but I wish it will be named ‘Dream’.
