[Video] Introduction to Exploring Taboos Project

Preparations continue for the first workshops in the “Exploring Taboos” project organized by the team from the Cairo-based group Nazra for Feminist Studies, one of the three projects in Egypt currently being supported by Rising Voices. One of the group's coordinators, Fatma Emam provides an overview and history of the group, as well as the goals of the planned workshops. Currently, the group is taking applications and interviewing potential participants to gauge their interest in learning how to use citizen media to discuss these sensitive issues relating to gender.

  • Thank you to Nazra for Feminist Studies, the group of young people in Egypt who are organizing together and creating this space for sharing, expressing, affirming, learning and evolving their individual and collective consciousness. And thank you to Fatma Emam, for representing the beautiful dark brown skinned spectrum of Egyptian peoples! In north america, where I am, we see overwhelmingly, only images of Egyptian, Middle Eastern and Moslem peoples who are light-skinned. So thank you! Dark brown skinned people are articulate, intelligent, and everywhere!

  • Hello Fatma,

    That’s a wonderful project!

I’m very interested in feminist studies and action and it’s good to know people from all over the world are engaged in promoting a more equal society!

Whenever you stop by in Brazil, let me know so we catch up! Feminists here are in an everyday struggle for gender equality!

    All the best,

    Diego Casaes.

Good luck Fatma and Nazra with your important work!

  • I am not an expert on feminism, but it is really an inspiring idea to use citizen media to exploring toboos. I think, not only in Egypt but also in many other countries, many different taboos are there but no one dares to talk about it. I am looking forward to see the future development of this project!
